Apple just released AppleCare+. When you buy your iPhone 4S, you can choose AppleCare+ for $100 to cover two accidental damages to the device.

AppleCare+ must be purchased when you buy a new device, and for each incident Apple will charge a $49 service fee. Beats having to buy a new iPhone when the screen cracks!

You can buy AppleCare+ now on Apple’s website, with a delivery date of October 14th. The iPhone 4S launches on October 14th, in case you didn’t know.

That’s lackluster compared to Squaretrade.  I paid $99.00 for a warranty and it covered my iPad 2 screen shatter.  I think their pricing for iPhone is comparable if not better to AppleCare+

What more magic we were supposed to be expecting today? I’m confused as to why the 4S is a letdown.

Any word on the glass used this time around on the 4S?  Is it the exact same?  Drop the iPhone 4S and it’ll shatter just like the 4?  I’m excited for the 4S, but I just find it ridiculous that we all have to live in fear of dropping our phone by buying bumpers, cases, warranties, etc.

Same $99 for two years. Same $50 detectible. Same non coverage of damage caused by jail breaking.

But Squaretrade only covers ‘normal use’ damage. if something really awful happens like you leave your phone on your car and it slides off and is run over, you could find that they say no. While Apple says okay so long as you haven’t gone over your 2 times.

Plus the risk that they might merely fix your phone and not replace it. While Apple might do the same thing for some issues, there’s a major question if Square is doing it, because they aren’t really forthcoming on the detail of being Apple Certified Techs or not. If they are not and they touch your phone you just lost your warranty with Apple. That could come back to bite folks in the butt later if the accidental damage was while you were still in the warranty period.

And imagine paying Squaretrade $99 and then having to pay another $50 service fee for some failure that would have been covered 100% by Apple if you’d had Apple care.

So is it really better to get Squaretrade over AppleCare+.

I bought an iPhone 4 opening weekend. Never had a case on it, not even a bumper. I’ve dropped it a dozen times with not so much as a scratch or a ding
