Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 17.2 to developers on Thursday. The major new feature seems to be the AI-enhanced Journal app that Apple previously promised. macOS 14.2 beta 1, iPadOS 17.2 beta 1, watchOS 10.2 beta 1 and tvOS 17.2 beta 1 are also available to devs.

These come just a day after the previous versions of all these operating system went out to the public.

Another day, another round of Apple operating system betas

Work on all Apple’s operating systems is virtually continuous. As soon as it releases one group of upgrades to the public, beta testing begins on the next versions. So just 24 hours after the release of iOS 17.1, macOS Sonoma 14.1 and watchOS 10.1 came the first round of beta testing on their replacements. The same is true for new OS versions for iPad and Apple TV.

The new iOS 17.2 pre-release version includes the upcoming Journal app that Apple promised back in June at WWDC when iOS was first unveiled. This uses on-device machine learning to help users chronicle important moments of their lives.

It is one of several features that Apple announced but said would debut after the original iOS 17 launch. Another example is AirDrop file transfers over the internet, now a part of iOS 17.1.

The beatas just went out to developers. The full list of changes is not yet available.

Just for devs

As it stands now, the first round of new updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV are available only for devs in Apple’s developer program.

And if Apple follows its usual habits, the second round of iOS 17.2, macOS 14.2, etc. betas won’t be out for two weeks.
