A recent update to both iPhoto and Aperture now allows both applications to share photo libraries for the first time. As noted by Apple, “All your photos stay together. And you get the best of both applications.”
Having a shared library is extremely useful for those who use both iPhoto and Aperture. No longer will you have to import and export photos for both applications in order to keep your libraries up to date. Many people like the advanced editing capabilities of Aperture, but enjoy the simplicity of managing photos with iPhoto, so this update will undoubtedly please many who are fans of both apps.
iPhoto 11 (version 9.3), and Aperture 3.3 are both available in the Mac App Store for purchase.

Great start. Now if Apple only created shared libraries for iMovie / Final Cut Pro & Garageband / Logic Pro
“The Mac Pro is largely seen as the ideal Mac for media work. It’s a standard work station for design professionals, photographers, and professional video editors.” Well, since you put it that way I guess we now know how this’ll turn out. While I hear endless media splash about Apple making inroads into enterprise, the fact is that it becomes more a consumer platform by the year with no real aim toward professional application at all. I love Apple products, including in the workplace, but that doesn’t change the facts.
Is this … forced sharing? I have both Aperture and iPhoto, but I use iPhoto for junk and Aperture for the photos I take and I don’t want the two libraries intermixed. They are both updating as I write. I hope the sharing isn’t mandatory.
Nope. You have to go into Aperture and import your iPhoto library for the sharing to kick in.
I also want to keep Aperture and iPhoto libraries separated. I have already imported my iPhoto library. How do I untether them? Thanks.
