This chunky silvery thing is an iKn2, a sturdy and secure case for iPad, built for those times when you might want to use one as a public kiosk device.
The case is made of aluminum, but its makers Identified Media say the metal is “radio-transparent”, allowing WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G signals to get through without any problems.
It’s lockable, so once the iPad’s inside, there’s no easy way to remove it. It’s mountable too. The entire case can be mounted to a pedestal (pictured), or on a table or a wall. It will fit on VESA brackets.
The design is patent pending and not quite ready; pre-orders are being taken here, priced at $99.

As someone who has designed software for kiosks, I think this is a fabulous idea. A good cheap alternative to using a Windows laptop with a touch screen and all the driver mess that entails.
It’s a very good idea to hide the home button, as once your kiosk app is running, only a crash will return you to the springboard… from where it’s easy to relaunch the app. The iPad can be locked down further using the iOS Restrictions to prevent annoying geeks from jail breaking it, or installing fart apps.
Have You seen this one: http://h2interactive.eu/produc…

This is nice but their claim that the metal doesn’t impede radio traffic is bogus as any electrical engineer will tell you. Try wrapping your ipad in aluminum foil with the screen exposed and watch the wifi. bluetooth and 3g signal strength drop. It will still work, just not anywhere near as well as it should.
Which is why you should consider our product, the lilipad kiosk system. We are the only iPad kiosk approved by Apple® to work with the iPad.
