9 great TV shows to binge-watch this holiday weekend

By

Thanks to a money-hungry decision to split the final season, a la Breaking Bad, the last episodes of Mad Men won’t air until next year. On the plus side, that means this is the perfect time to play catch-up before the world goes Don Draper crazy one last time.If for some incredible reason you’ve never seen Mad Men before (and how I envy you if that’s the case), the show follows the lives of a few Madison Avenue ad men and women during the 1950s and '60s. We’ve now reached the point of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and things are set for a grand finale.Photo: HBO

If you are looking for older shows that have become classics as time goes on, “Sports Night” is a must watch. It’s available on iTunes for 30 bucks for two seasons (trust me buy them so you can watch them over and over again).

It’s the first of Aaron Sorkin’s string of well written TV shows (West Wing and Newsroom). First ignore the laugh track on the first few episodes as it was forced on him by ABC. Second it’s a show about a sports show that has nothing to do with sports.

The characters are well developed from the get go, and the interaction between them is top notch. It’s also fun to catch all the “Sorkinisms” that he developed on Sports Night that you see in later series (see the “walk and talk”).

ABC totally screwed the pooch on canceling it after 2 season, but in the 13 years since it went off the air it picked up followers who are now going back and viewing it for the first time.

on the darker side….FX network’s “The Strain”

I would have left out several of those, but added Fargo and House of Cards

Of course these plenty more seasons of Walking Dead to come, its based on an ongoing comic thats been around for 10+ years! The most recent comic was #134, but the show has only caught up to around #67. If you love the show, read the comic.

Peaky Blinders (as recommended by the cast of CultCast).
