5MP Camera Module Won’t Fit In Next iPod Touch… But 3.2MP Module Just Might

Last we heard, it seemed likely that the next iPod Touch would be camera-equipped with, at the bare minimum, a forward facing, video-only FaceTime camera… but due to space constraints, it didn’t look like the Touch would also gain the iPhone 4’s 5MP camera.

Today, MacRumors is following up last week’s speculation with the idea that while the 5MP camera won’t fit into the iPod Touch’s chassis, 3.2MP camera could conceivably fit… if Apple made the iPod Touch’s thickness uniform across all capacities.

But even that specific camera module would have difficulty fitting into the current iPod touch body, as iFixit’s Kyle Wiens tells us that the iPhone 3GS camera’s 5 mm depth is still too much for the iPod touch’s tapered body. A “squaring off” of the body similar to that seen on the iPhone 4 would seem to leave sufficient room for the 3GS-like camera module if Apple decided to go with a uniform 8.5 mm thickness, the current maximum thickness of the iPod touch.

That would be an acceptable compromise as far as I’m concerned, but our archives reveal another possibility: back in May, a Vietnamese site which also got its hands on one of the first iPhone 4 and new unibody plastic MacBooks posted images of an iPod Touch with a 2MP camera.

Maybe Apple doesn’t need to muck with the Touch’s dimensions at all: maybe they just need to shrink down the megapixels just a little more.
