iPad shipments increased a whopping 75% during the first quarter of the year over same period of 2020, according a market analysis firm. It’s the result of people needing computers to work and learn from home as the pandemic drags on.
Other tablet makers saw strong Q1 2021 growth as well, but iPad continues to dominate the market.

Apple is holding its iPad wrong. The company designs its tablets as if the best way to hold one is in a portrait orientation. But landscape is actually more common, and Apple should make changes to the iPad’s design to reflect that.

Apple's A14 processor will pave the way for Apple technology in the future. Screenshot: Apple
Apple’s VP of Platform Architecture Tim Millet says the company’s A14 chip, which debuted last month in the fourth-generation iPad Air, will take machine learning to the next level.
“It takes my breath away when I see what people can do with the A14 Bionic chip,” Millet told German magazine Stern.
Manufactured using a 5nm process, the mobile chip boasts an astonishing 11.8 billion transistors, up significantly from the 8.5 billion of the A13. It is expected to power this year’s upcoming iPhones.

The iPad Air 4 is the first computer of any kind unveiled with the Apple A14 processor. The tablet isn’t out yet, but an early Geekbench 5 benchmark score apparently shows it’s nearly 50% faster than its predecessor.
This bodes well for the iPhone 12, which is also expected to run Apple’s new chip.

Picking up a new iPad Air next month? If you’re switching from a 11-inch iPad Pro, you will be pleased to know that most of your existing accessories should work just fine with your new tablet.
Both devices are almost identical in size, with the new iPad Air being ever so slightly thicker than the iPad Pro. Unless you have an incredibly tight-fitting case, you shouldn’t have any compatibility issues.

Apple executives took to virtual stages on Tuesday to unveil a parade of important new products at its “Time Flies” event. The much-anticipated Apple Watch made its debut, and a cheaper version too. And the iPad Air got a massive upgrade. Plus, there are new services and more.
Here’s why you shouldn’t overlook anything Apple just announced.

For Apple leaker Jon Prosser, Tuesday’s “Time Flies” event was a make-or-break situation.
Prosser, the Front Page Tech YouTuber whose reputation took a hit last week after he claimed Apple would launch new Apple Watches and iPads via press release, staked his continued relevance on his predictions for the event.
When the dust finally settled Tuesday, Prosser did not find himself slurping up a hot bowl of claim chowder. In fact, he pretty much nailed it.
iPad Air 4 greatly expands the color options for Apple’s mid-range tablet. Screenshot: Apple
The iPad Air 4 brings the most significant changes to this tablet since it debuted. The display expanded to 10.9 inches, even as the screen bezels shrank. There’s plenty of other new features too, like USB-C. And new colors and better cameras.
But all these enhancements come with a significant price increase.

Apple will hold an online event on September 15. That’s all we know for sure. But leaks, rumors and unconfirmed reports reveal much more, with multiple new devices supposedly on the docket — although maybe not the one you expect.
An event with no real people in attendance, it likely will follow the template of Apple’s virtual Worldwide Developers Conference from June, which drew much praise. Here’s what you can expect from Apple’s September event next Tuesday.
Apple’s next virtual event will take place on September 15 — but don’t expect to see the new iPhone 12 models.
The big announcements for the “Time Flies” event that Apple announced Tuesday will likely be the new Apple Watch and iPad. The Apple Watch Series 6 could feature blood-oxygen tracking. Meanwhile, the iPad Air 4 could borrow a design from the iPad Pro — but retain Touch ID.

Sources familiar with Apple’s plans have confirmed to Bloomberg that a new iPad Air and Apple Watch refresh are on their way this fall.
The unnamed insiders corroborate recent leaks that indicate the new iPad Air will have an edge-to-edge display, like iPad Pro. The new Apple Watch is expected to come in two very different variants.

Images that appear to show training manuals or marketing images for the forthcoming iPad Air 4 were posted by an Apple leaker posted Wednesday.
The images, posted by Twitter user DuanRi, show off a design similar to the iPad Pro. If the images are real, the iPad Air 4 will be the first in this series without a Home key. And there’ll be a single rear-mounted camera.
Interestingly, the images also suggest Apple will stick with Touch ID, rather than adopting Face ID for the next-gen iPad Air. The Touch ID sensor will be incorporated into the power button, not under the display (as some previous rumors suggested).
