This Rollerskate Octopus Tripod Will Help You Do Bullet-Time Videos On Your iPhone

By

cult_logo_featured_image_missing_default1920x1080

This strange, rollerskating octopus? It’s a GorillaPod dolly for photographers and cinematographers as well as a time lapse photography tool that not only allows fluid camera movement around a subject (think Matrix-style bullet time), but have wheels that are smartly marked for time lapse photography, allowing you to move them a specific amount every frame. It works with any camera, including the iPhone.

Cineskate’s maker, Justin Jensen, is trying to get the project off the ground over at Kickstarter. A $150 pledge will get you one.

Ahead Of Hurricane Irene Landfall, Apple Closes Retail Stores In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut

If you’re in New York City, don’t think you can bide your time hanging around at the Apple Store before Hurricane Irene hits: Apple has closed their Fifth Avenue, West 14th Street, West Upper Side and SoHo stores.

But that’s not all: they’re also closing a number of stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

If anyone wants to meet me at one of the Boston Apple Stores to wait out the meteorological apocalypse, though, let me know: I’ll bring beer.

Legend of Grimrock for the iPad Is A First-Person Dungeon Crawler For iPad That Will Have You Drooling

I was always a sucker for those first-person dungeon crawlers from the 80s — games like Dungeon Master, The Bard’s Tale and even the first Phantasy Star game for the Sega Master System — so I’m positively drooling over this footage of the upcoming Legend of Grimrock.

Sure, it’s footage from the PC version of the game, but it’s coming to iPad too, and should look just about as good. Sadly, though, there’s no release details short of “before the end of the year.”

Apple Kills Off iTunes TV Show Rentals

By

itunesrentals

Well, that’s disappointing: Apple’s killed off TV show rentals, claiming that “iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows.” That’s probably true, especially since Apple’s prices aren’t competitive to the likes of a la carte subscription services like Netflix and Hulu Plus. Could this be in preparation for their own streaming TV service, though?

Apple Seeds OS X 10.7.2, iCloud Beta 9 and iPhoto 9.2 Beta 3 for Devs

By

Screen-Shot-2011-08-26-at-8.21.37-PM

A week after the last iOS 5 beta, Apple has just released some new developer builds of OS X Lion 10.7.2, iCloud and iPhoto.

The major area of change and focus in OS X Lion 10.7.2 include AirPort, AppKit, Graphics, iCal, iChat, the Mac App Store, Mail, Spotlight and Time Machine.

iCloud will continue to allow developers to test iCloud compatibility with their apps, while the next version of iPhoto is expected to introduce Photo Stream, a new way of syncing photos between your iPhone’s camera roll and iCloud.

This Accessory Turns Your iPad 2 Smart Cover Into A 4 Hour Battery Pack

By

Screen Shot 2011-08-25 at 2.02.31 PM

Here’s a great idea, executed with typical Far East crapgadget mediocrity by Brando: what if your iPad 2’s Smart Cover was actually a battery pack?

Not a shabby idea in the abstract, but Brando hopelessly mucks it up with their Anytone Smart Cover. While it can extend the iPad 2’s 10-hour battery by another four or five hours, the proper way to do this is to make a Smart Cover with the battery packs inside the Cover, not slapped as a sticker to the outside.

What do you expect for the price, though? It’s just thirty eight bucks.

Who Is Apple’s New CEO Tim Cook? [Bio]

Apple's new boss will sit opposite Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg a D10 next month.
Apple's new boss will sit opposite Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg a D10 next month.

The most valuable tech company on Earth has a new boss, and it’s Tim Cook, an intensely private and soft-spoken man who is taking over the role of CEO from one of the most iconic personalities on the planet. But who is Tim Cook? What’s he like? What’s he done to deserve the job? And can Apple really succeed without Steve Jobs at the helm?

To the latter question, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, Tim Cook has arguably been running Apple’s day-to-day operations for years. He has been more integral than anyone else in the company short of Steve himself in turning Apple around from a dying and moribund PC maker into the unstoppable juggernaut the company is today. Here’s what you need to know.

Hey Samsung! Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 Didn’t Invent Tablets, Apple Did. Here’s Proof

By

bbctv

Yesterday, Samsung used Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey — a forty year old science fiction movie about a future that is now ten years old — as an example of prior art in their ongoing IP lawsuits. Samsung claimed that the tablets shown in 2001 were prior art, and they proved that Apple didn’t actually invent the idea of a touchscreen tablet; therefore, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab can’t be accused of ripping off the iPad.

Seems like a pretty good argument. The only problem? The devices shown in 2001 aren’t touchscreen tablets at all!

Launchpad Cleaner 2 Is A Gorgeous Way To Make Launchpad Work For You

By

LaunchpadCleaner-2

Love it or hate it, Launchpad is here to stay in OS X Lion, but even if you’re on board with the idea of Launchpad philosophically, it does have one blatant problem in that it shows every app on your machine by default… not very handy for those of us with a thousand pieces of software on our machine who’d like to use Launchpad as a more minimalist launcher for our favorite apps.

We’ve looked at utilities before that help manage LaunchPad, but they were pretty rudimentary affairs… just a list of apps and some tick boxes.

Launchpad Cleaner 2, though? Bloody gorgeous. You can not only hide apps from showing up in Launchpad and rename them, you can even back up your Launchpad layout and export it to another machine. Sounds like just the sort of thing that could actually make Launchpad usable for power users… surely worth $4.99.

Do you think in suing Samsung over their Android tablets and smartphones that Apple is going too far? Answer our poll and, if you feel like it, we’d love for you to elaborate more in the comments.

Logitech’s Fold-Up Keyboard Is A Bulky Transformer For Your iPad

By

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

About eight years ago, I didn’t have an iPad or an iPhone, I had a Dell Axim X5, Dell’s woefully ugly entry into the Pocket PC market. I loved the thing, especially in conjunction with a wonderful accessory that allowed me to collapse a roughly netbook-sized keyboard into the space of a small pocket notebook.

I’m sort of amused, then, to see Logitech dusting off this old approach to mobile keyboards with their new Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard for iPad, but it’s almost like they were taking stupid pills when they were designing it.

Here’s How Apple Could Use Pico Projectors And Sensors To Give iPhone 5 Holographic Keyboard [Concept Video]

By

post-110083-image-0c9bf33a857aff7ca5ca3c96facedc4b-jpg

This concept video by San Francisco design house Aatma Studios starts off pretty well: they envision future iPhones and iPads using a combination of a built-in pico projector and IR sensors to project a light-based keyboard on a flat surface. Just type on that projected keyboard as you would on any other and the iPhone will register your keystrokes.
