For all the cool AR-based games and AAA-quality titles you’ll find in the App Store, a big part of me hankers after some good, old-fashioned retro gaming fun.

The upcoming action platformer Unbroken Soul hits that sweet spot perfectly. No, it’s not a classic game port like Golden Axe, but it sure looks like it could have sat happily alongside it. Check out the trailer below.

Top iPhone apps still pull in vastly more money than Android‘s best sellers

The 100 biggest software developers on the Apple App Store took in a whopping 64 percent more than the highest-earning Android app makers during the first the first three months of this year.

And the iPhone devs saw a 12 percent average year-over-year increase in revenue during Q1, according to a market research firm.

iOS 13 and iPadOS now warn you if you attempt to delete apps with active subscriptions.

The new popup, which was introduced in Apple’s second beta builds on Monday, also includes a “Manage Subscription” button that makes it easier to cancel subs you no longer need.

In a subtle, but significant, change, iOS and Mac app listings on the web now direct users to a URL at apps.apple.com, instead of itunes.apple.com.

This follows WWDC, where Apple shared details of a world beyond iTunes. Apple is breaking up the iTunes app into Music, Podcasts, and TV apps. While you don’t need to worry about your iTunes content, this is the latest example of Apple shifting away from that branding.

PBS president says new App Store rules will hurt its educational app

Apple’s efforts to limit data sharing on kids’ apps will hurt one of PBS’s educational apps, the broadcaster’s president and CEO has revealed.

Speaking at Recode‘s Code Conference 2019, PBS’s Paula Kerger said the company’s PBS Kids steaming app will be affected by new Apple restrictions. These stop developers of kids’ apps from including third-party ads and analytics tools. These rules will go into effect on September 3.

A law firm is looking for iOS developers to join a class-action suit against Apple for the way it runs the App Store. The lawyers accuse the company of “anticompetitive practices.”

One of their goals is to open up distribution of iPhone and iPad apps, which currently can only be downloaded through Apple. The lawsuit also wants a decrease in the commissions devs must pay.

App Store’s cellular download limit increases on iPhone

Apple has finally increased the App Store’s cellular download limit on the iPhone — but not by much.

You can now download up to 200MB over a 3G or 4G connection. The limit was previously set at 150MB. You will still need to connect to a Wi-Fi network to download larger apps and games.

An update for Microsoft Excel on the iPhone may not sound like the most exciting thing. But the update in question is actually pretty darn neat. That’s regardless of whether you regularly use spreadsheets or just fancy a neat tech demo.

The update lets you easily import spreadsheets by simply snapping a photo with your iPhone. The image you take of a paper-based spreadsheet is then recognized and turned into a fully functioning editable spreadsheet.

Apple pulls popular iOS game after Chinese company steals its name

Apple has kicked a popular iOS game out of the App Store after a Chinese company stole its name.

Clicker Heroes, which first made its debut on iPhone and iPad back in 2015, is a highly-rated idle RPG from Playsaurus. It’s usually free to download, but it’s no longer available on iOS.

There’s currently no word on if or when it will return, but it doesn’t look good.

Worse Than Death, the new game created by horror title Home creator Benjamin Rivers, has a release date in the App Store.

The pixel art action-adventure game, which combines puzzle solving and exploration with plenty of scares will debut on June 26. Check out the trailer below.

How to get a refund for any App Store app

The lack of trial versions on the App Store makes it risky to take a punt on any app that costs more than a few bucks. $50 is a fair price for a pro-level app, but it’s a lot to drop without testing it out first. No amount of videos or reviews will tell you if it’s right for you. Fortunately, there’s a workaround. Kind of. You can request a refund for any app you buy, and often you’ll get it.

TikTok remains most-downloaded app on iOS

TikTok may be a bit of a head-scratcher for older users, but there’s no denying its popularity. According to a new report, the video-sharing app was the most popular iOS app for the first quarter of 2019.

That means beating out giants like YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, which have the backing of either Google or Facebook. In total, TikTok was downloaded an astonishing 11.7 million times in the quarter.
