Apple is bringing Friday Night Baseball to life in a whole new way on the Vision Pro headset. For the first time, baseball fans will be able to watch live games in Apple Immersive Video, putting them closer to the action than a traditional broadcast can.
Apple Immersive Video offers 3D video recorded in 8K with a 180-degree field of view.
The first game in the enhanced format comes on August 28 pitting the Red Sox vs. the Yankees. Going forward in the 2026 season, a game each Friday will be watchable in 3D.
A way to demo the Vision Pro’s capabilities
Apple needs compelling content that shows why Vision Pro is worth its hefty price tag. Immersive sports broadcasts like Friday Night Baseball give Apple a chance to demonstrate capabilities that simply aren’t possible on a conventional TV.
By giving people a reason to experience what Vision Pro can actually do, Apple clearly hopes to turn the headset’s impressive technology into something more tangible: sales.
Red Sox-Yankees rivalry gets the Vision Pro treatment
The first MLB game in Apple Immersive will feature one of baseball’s biggest rivalries. On August 28, Vision Pro users will be able to watch the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees as though they were in the stadium, not just watching it on a screen.
The cameras will be positioned to provide unusual perspectives that put viewers right in the middle of the action. Fans will get close-up views of at-bats, celebrations in the dugout and plays at the outfield wall.
Apple is also giving the broadcast its own presentation. Paul Severino will handle play-by-play duties alongside analyst Xavier Scruggs, while Michelle Margaux provides sideline reporting. The experience includes dedicated replays and an immersive graphics package that displays lineups and statistics in the viewer’s space.
Apple Immersive Video brings the stadium home
The immersive experience doesn’t stop just because play does. During breaks in the game, the broadcast will remain live, allowing Vision Pro users to take in the atmosphere of the stadium from different angles.
Ambisonic microphones will capture the sounds of the ballpark in Spatial Audio, adding another layer of realism to the experience. Instead of simply hearing a crowd through television speakers, Vision Pro users can experience the sounds as though they’re actually sitting inside the stadium.
Full-game replays and a highlight package featuring the biggest moments will also be available on demand through the Apple TV app for Vision Pro.
Friday Night Baseball expands its reach
After the Red Sox-Yankees. game in August, MLB games in Apple Immersive Video include:
- September 4 — Los Angeles Angels at Pittsburgh Pirates
- September 11 — San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants
- September 18 — San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
The live immersive broadcasts will be available to Vision Pro (M5) or Vision Pro (M2) owners with an Apple TV subscription in the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
Apple has increasingly used sports as a showcase for what Vision Pro can do, and baseball could be particularly well suited to the technology. The combination of a wide field of view, high-resolution 3D video and Spatial Audio could give fans a perspective impossible to replicate with a conventional television broadcast.
Just part of Friday Night Baseball
While only some games are being broadcast in Apple Immersive Video, that’s just a small part of Friday Night Baseball, Apple’s weekly Major League Baseball doubleheader. This offers Apple TV subscribers two games every Friday night during the regular season, along with pregame and postgame coverage. No Vision Pro required.
