Saturday Night Live’s Cecily Strong is bringing her comedy chops to Apple TV+ for a musical series about a couple who discover a strange town while backpacking.
Apple is reportedly nearing a series order for the comedy, created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, writers known for the Despicable Me franchise.
The unnamed series follows a couple trying to re-energize their relationship with a backpacking trip. They stumble into the town of Schmigadoon, where everyone acts and sings as if they’re in a 1940s musical, according to entertainment site Variety. The couple finds they can’t leave the town until they find true love.
If Apple orders the series, this will be the second original comedy this week added to the Apple TV+ lineup. On Thursday, we reported on a new ’80s-themed aerobics comedy starring Rose Byrne that’s coming to the streaming service.
Strong joined the SNL troupe in 2012. On the show, she plays a number of offbeat characters (and does a mean Melania Trump impersonation). Her resume lists several other acting credits in TV and film, including the reboot of Ghostbusters.
Strong will be in good company with Apple, joining two former SNL case members Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jason Sudeikis, both of whom are developing comedies for the service.
Variety reported that Paul will serve as showrunner, with Daurio a consulting producer. Strong will serve as a producer and star. Executive producers are Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer.
