mophie just unveiled a pair of external batteries designed to supply up to 18W of power. They can give recent iPhone models up to a 50 percent charge in half an hour.

This is possible because the new powerstation PD and PD XL each have a USB-C port, enabling them to transfer more power than older USB-A ports.

Look for “PD” on your chargers and batteries

As their names imply, these new products use the PD (Power Delivery) standard designed to increase the speed at which batteries charge.

“We developed this new line of powerstation batteries using the power delivery protocol so consumers can charge as quickly and safely as possible,” said Robert Johnson, general manager for mophie, in a statement. “As consumer habits evolve, mophie adapts to deliver the most advanced charging solutions that are convenient, fast, and efficient. The powerstation PD and PD XL are no exception.”

The powerstation PD features a 6,700mAh battery, while the powerstation PD XL includes a 10,050mAh one. How much each can extend the life of your phone, tablet, or even Mac varies from device to device.

Faster charging with USB-C

The mophie powerstation PD and PD XL include a USB-C port which delivers fast charging (18W). This same port is also used to recharge the powerstation (15W). An additional USB-A port allows a second device to be charged simultaneously, just not as quickly.

These accessories do not come with the USB-C to Lightning cables required to more quickly recharge iPhones. Those must be purchased separately for about $20. Still, the prices for these are expected to drop soon.

When recharging mophie’s external battery, current is sent to connected devices first before the powerstation itself starts to recharge. This is called ith Priority+ charging. An LED power indicator displays the charging status and current battery life.

The mophie powerstation PD ($59.95) and powerstation PD XL ($79.95) are available today on mophie.com.

Those who want an external battery with a USB-C port and even more stored power should consider the powerstation USB-C 3XL.
