WhatsApp is rolling out big improvements to group messaging that make it easier to manage your conversations, catch up on what you’ve missed, and more. It has also added enhanced controls for group admins.
Here’s what you have to look forward to on iPhone today.
WhatsApp now boasts well over 1 billion active users around the world, and many of those use group messaging to keep in touch with family and friends.
“There are also people coming together in groups on WhatsApp like new parents looking for support, students organizing study sessions, and even city leaders coordinating relief efforts after natural disasters,” WhatsApp says.

Now those group chats are improving in a big way. WhatsApp today rolled out an update that gives group admins greater control, makes it easier to keep up with busy conversations, and adds group chat protections.
Admins can now add a description to their groups that specify its purpose, guidelines, or topics. When a new participant joins, they’ll see the description at the top of the chat window. Admins can also specify which participants can change things like the group description or image.
WhatsApp has also added a handy catch up feature. If you’ve been away from a busy group chat for a while, you can tap the new @ button to quickly view mentions or messages that reply to you without having to trawl through the whole conversation.
You can also search for group participants from within the group’s info page. Admins also have the ability to revoke admin privileges from other group members, but group creators can no longer have their admin privileges removed.
Finally, there are new protections to prevent members from repeatedly joining groups that they have previously left.
