Having problem with downloading apps off the App Store?

You’re not alone. It appears that Apple’s servers are experiencing an outage based on user reports from Twitter that indicate the problem has been on going for over an hour.

The official Apple System Status page does not show that there are any outage, however, DownDetector shows the service has been down since at 3:49PM ET.

Cult of Mac has reached out to Apple for comment on how widespread the outage is and if there is any ETA on a resolution. We’ll let you know if we hear back.

I don’t know why the iTunes and App Stores should go down, unless they are doing something drastic like changing over the system. I was under the impression that Apple was using Akamai content delivery and all Apple had was the master server with all of the content, but everything was replicated and located on Akamai servers at various ISP’s around the world, so that when we, the user, go to the site, we aren’t actually hitting Apple’s server, we are actually hitting duplicates that are hosted on Akamai servers that might be residing at our ISP or somewhere physically near where we are based on what network we are on.

I did read a while back that Apple was working on their own system that would potentially replace Akamai servers, and maybe that’s what is going on. Maybe they have outages when they transition some of the Akamai data onto a new replacement system.
