If the iPhone 6s Plus seems just a little bit too small in your monstrous hands, fret not dear giant friends: Apple may be planning to go even bigger with a super-sized iPhone 7s Pro.
Apple is looking to add a 5.8-inch OLED display to the iPhone in 2017 or 2018, according to a new rumor that claims Samsung is already on board to supply the screens.
with LG and Japan Display also looking to join in the production later
The current iPhone 6s Plus uses a 5.3-inch LED display, but Apple could launch a device featuring a 5.8-inch AMOLED display as soon as 2017, reports DigiTimes, quoting supply chain sources.
In a pre-publication note obtained by Motley Fool, Digitimes says “supply chain sources believe that 50 million of these AMOLED-equipped iPhones will make it out to customers in the first year of availability.”
While 50 million OLED displays wouldn’t come close to matching the 200 million iPhones Apple sold last year, the new super-bright, super-saturated displays might only be used in the iPhone 7s Pro or iPhone 8 Pro at first.
The lingering question is, how many could Apple procure in time for a 2017 launch? According to this report, Samsung would be the initial supplier, with LG and Japan Display looking to add production capacity later.
Supply constraints might increase the odds that the AMOLED displays would first appear as a premium feature on a photography-focused iPhone Pro before being adopted by Apple’s smaller smartphones.
DigiTimes‘ track record with Apple rumors has been spotty at best the past five years, so take the rumor with a grain of salt. However, Apple has been rumored to be looking into OLED displays the past few years.
Adding OLED displays to the iPhone would be a no-brainer, especially now that Samsung’s Galaxy S7’s OLED screen makes the iPhone 6s look pale and washed-out in comparison.
