Update: iOS 8.0.1 upgraders are reporting problems with Touch ID and cellular connectivity after installing Apple’s update. You should wait before taking the plunge. If you’ve already installed iOS 8.0.1, here’s how to downgrade to iOS 8.

Apple has pulled an iOS 8.0.1 update that fixed problems with HealthKit and various other features after iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users discovered the update broke Touch ID and blocked cellular connectivity.

The iOS 8.0.1 update was also supposed to improve Reachability on the iPhone 6, but it has already been removed while Apple addresses the nest of new bugs it unleashed.

The update came just a week after Apple released iOS 8 to the public, and although it was not a massive release, it was a significant one. Its highlight was a fix for a pesky HealthKit bug that prevented Apple from rolling out big updates for a host of popular health and fitness apps.

iOS 8.0.1 also fixed an issue that prevented some apps from accessing the Photo Library, and another that caused third-party keyboards to become deselected when a user enters their passcode. A bug that prevented users from uploading photos and videos in Safari was also quashed, as was a problem that could cause unexpected data usage when receiving messages.

For iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users, this update was supposed to improve the reliability of Apple’s new Reachability feature, which makes areas of the screen easier to reach when you’re using your phone with just one hand. There was also better support for Ask To Buy for Family Sharing in In-App Purchases.

Prior to Apple’s pulling the upgrade, you could download iOS 8.0.1 over-the-air using Software Update on your iOS device. While the upgrade weighed in at just 72.2MB, you needed 1.6GB of free space to install it. If you didn’t have that, you could update via iTunes instead.

  9. Pad level says:

Do not update if you have an iPhone 6 or Plus. You will get no carrier service and touchID will not work. This only affects the 6 and 6 Plus, and mainly with US carriers. Repeat, DO NOT UPDATE.

  13. JZ says:

Don’t update for now. Many users (myself included) losing service / touch ID.

  14. Robin Driscoll says:

You guys had me scared. I had already hit update OTA before reading the comments. It updated fine on my iPhone5. I guess it’s mostly the iPhone 6 and 6+ The only thing I can’t get to work is the Edit screen in the Notifications. When I click Edit that screen is blank, no widgets. This update didn’t fix that.

  15. Pad level says:

DO NOT UPDATE VIA OTA. Use ITunes for the update.

  16. Perry Donham says:

Looks as though Apple has pulled the update.

    • Matthew Strand says:

Yeah, I can’t get it either via iTunes or OTA. I think this is a first for Apple… to send out an update and then retract it. We’ve just seen history in the making.

  17. Frankie Tommy DeVito says:

Wow, glad I waited. What in the f%K is their issue lately!?

  18. AnaChocha says:

how this escapes apple baffles me

  19. RaptorOO7 says:

Where has Apples quality control gone, first #Bendgate or #BentGazi and now poor QC on their broken OS and its subsequent update. Glad my 6+ is at least 6 weeks out from arriving by then all the bugs will be worked out and the apps will be optimized.
