Steve Jobs can’t stop porn on Apple devices, but low FaceTime adoption can, apparently.

We’ve been following the rise of FaceTime adult chat company iP4Play since it launched in August 2010.

Now Cult of Mac has learned the company is bust: operations officially ceased last week.

iP4Play blames slow adoption of FaceTime, Apple’s videoconferencing technology, rather than any failings of the company. Not enough people are using FaceTime, whether for sex chat or anything else, the company’s CEO says.

iP4Play seemed to get off to a rousing start,  claiming 1,000 paid chats in its first five days and expanding the number of video vixens available and types of chats over time. Calls cost $4.00/minute and customers paid via credit card for time increments of 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes.

We asked CEO Travis Falstad what brought the lights down on the company.

Cult of Mac: What brought the company down — not enough customers? Production costs? Not enough people using FaceTime?

Travis Falstad: Lack of FaceTime adoption and competition from webcams, coupled with higher costs to maintain quality talent…

We thank everyone for their support. Our staff gave it their all but we were just a little bit ahead of the curve. We are proud of what we accomplished with a new technology in a short time.

CoM: Do you still owe the talent money?

TF: We’re making sure everyone gets paid for their work.

CoM: How many employees did you have?

TF: Approximately 40 as of last week.

CoM: What advice would you give to someone trying to launch a similar company?

TF: Wait a little while until FaceTime has wider adoption.  I really do believe there’s something here.

CoM: What’s next for you?

TF: I have another mobile app project currently in production.  Definitely more on that to come!
