The Apple TV+ streaming service earned more Emmy Award nominations than it ever has before. There were 72 noms for 16 different shows, including The Morning Show, Palm Royale, Lessons in Chemistry, Slow Horses, Loot, Hijack and many more.

“We are so thankful to the Television Academy for honoring our storytellers with a record number of Emmy nominations today,” said Jamie Erlicht, Apple’s head of Worldwide Video.

Emmy noms go to Apple TV+ drama and comedy series

Many people questioned that a computer-maker could make a watchable movies and series when Apple TV+ first launched. Almost five years later, the streaming service has produced numerous hits and earned plenty of awards. It scored 54 Emmy nominations in 2023, and this year the total is 72.

The standout is the The Morning Show, which earned 16 nominations in total, including for Outstanding Drama Series and ten acting nominations. Stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Beharie, Karen Pittman, Greta Lee, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Jon Hamm, Holland Taylor, and Marcia Gay Harden were all recognized for their performances.

Palm Royale scored 11 nominations in its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph landed noms in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category.

Next there’s Lessons in Chemistry, which landed ten nominations in total, including the first-ever Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category nomination for Apple TV+. Plus there are acting noms for stars Brie Larson, Lewis Pullman and Aja Naomi King.

Not far behind is Slow Horses. It earned nine nominations overall, including outstanding Drama Series. In addition, acting noms went to star Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce.

Hijack star Idris Elba was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Maya Rudolph was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Loot.

Nonfiction shows earns nominations, too

Apple Original documentaries were also recognized.  STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces and Girls State landed multiple nominations, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

Apple’s The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy becomes the first Apple Original docuseries to be recognized in the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special category. It earned two nominations overall. And for the seventh consecutive year, Apple’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series scoreed a nomination for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama, or Variety Series.

Room for improvement

While the Apple TV+ total of 72 nominations is more than it’s ever earned before, it’s still behind some of its rivals. Netflix got 107 noms, and FX got 93. HBO garnered 91.

That said, fourth place in the number of nominations is nothing for Apple to be embarrassed about. It came out solidly ahead of other streamers Prime Video (37 nominations), Hulu (26) and Disney+ (19). And the iPhone-maker also beat all the traditional broadcast networks, including ABC and CBS (38 nominations each), NBC (33) and FOX (6).

The Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled for September 15. ABC will broadcast the event.
