Matt Damon and Casey Affleck are teaming up again for The Instigators. It’s a buddy action comedy with the two playing thieves stealing from a corrupt politician.

The Apple TV+ film premieres in August.

The Instigators is in a classic but fun film genre

For some reason, Apple TV+ struggles to make a successful action movie. Argylle is packed with stars but was a dud in theaters. And while Ghosted got lots of attention, much of it was negative. The Family Plan just came and went. The streaming service is trying again with The Instigators.

“The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” Matt Damon told Entertainment Weekly. He also said he’d always “wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”

In the film, Damon plays a father who teams up with an ex-con played by Casey Affleck “to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician,” according to Apple. As one would expect in a comedy, nothing goes to plan and the two “find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by the police but also backward bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses.”

The Instigators is about two strangers who are hired for a heist,” Affleck told EW. “They become frenemies and then become friends while Jack Harlow yells at us, Paul Walter Hauser insults us, Ving Rhames hunts us, and Hong Chau keeps us alive.”

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck (along with brother Ben Affleck) have been friends for decades. They last starred together in Oppenheimer. Their upcoming film is set in Boston because of course it is: it stars Damon and Affleck.

Coming to Apple TV+ this summer

The Instigators will premiere in select theaters on August 2. But Apple TV+ subscribers won’t have to wait long, as the heist movie is scheduled to debut on the streaming service on August 9.

Watching will come with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also access it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.

And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There’s a library of drama, comedies, sci-fi, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
