The hit series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is officially getting a season two. In addition, Apple TV+ struck a deal with Legendary Entertainment that will result in multiple spinoff series based on the franchise.

“We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV+.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is an action drama series set in a world in which Godzilla and other classic kaiju are real … and occasionally devastate cities.

Season one followed three generations of the Randa family, plus Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell). It tells the story of the Monarch organization studying titans — Godzilla and other giant kaiju. The series moves between the group founding Monarch in the 1950s/1960s and a later generation in 2015 affected by the battle between kaiju that destroyed so much of San Francisco.

Realistically, there was little room for doubt there’d be a season two. The series was at the tops of the ratings charts its entire run in late 2023/early 2024.

But the Apple TV+ announcement of a second season says absolutely nothing about what to expect. Fortunately, a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) drops a few hints.

Godzilla is in there, of course, but Kong is too. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season one ended with a very broad suggestion that the big ape would be putting in an appearance, so this isn’t surprising.

Mystery Monsterverse spinoffs

Apple and Legendary also dropped no hints about the promised multiple spinoff series set in the Monsterverse. But the storyline from season one of the Apple TV+ series takes place in the 1950s while also including events over the next half a century as the secretive Monarch organization is formed to study kaiju and defend humanity against them. There’s plenty of room for additional stories.

The upcoming series have a lot to draw from. Legendary’s Monsterverse began in 2014 with Godzilla, and continued with Kong: Skull Island in 2017, Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. There might also be tie-ins to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, currently in theaters.

Dive in now

The first ten episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters are ready to stream now. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when season two will join them.
