Don’t expect Vision Pro 2 or Vision Air before 2027

Vision Pro may be Apple’s only AR headset until 2027. The company has yet to start work on Vision Pro 2 or Vision Air, according to a trusted analyst.

That said, Apple is allegedly working on ways to produce the current Vision Pro more cheaply, which could lead to a price cut next year.

No VisionPro 2 before 2027

Vision Pro is Apple’s first AR headset, and it’s packed with cutting-edge technology. Wearers look at tiny micro-OLED screens with resolution better than 4K, for example. It uses the same processor as a MacBook.

Given that the price tag is $3,5000, many buyers are interested but are waiting for a significantly cheaper version. The wait might be a long one.

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who follows Apple for TF International Securities, said in a research note on Wednesday:

“The market generally expects Apple to release a lower-priced version with downgraded specs (e.g., reduced number of cameras, removal of EyeSight, etc.) and a new model with upgraded specs. However, my latest survey indicates that Apple has not officially started either project.”

The analyst indicated that Apple is taking feedback on the current version and will use this to design future ones. But the company is in no hurry. Kuo said:

“It is currently estimated that new models with significant changes to the Vision Pro specification may not be in mass production until 2027.”

Somewhat cheaper variant on the way

Apple is reportedly hard at work on a Vision Pro-related project that’ll launch in the fourth quarter of 2024 or the first quarter of next year, but it’s not one that people might expect.

“The new project focuses on improving the efficiency of production and supply chain management rather than changing specs,” said the long-time Apple analyst.

But this is good news for those interested in the product, as the project will likely lower the cost of producing the headset, a savings that Apple can then pass on to future customers. What that price might be in 2025 is anyone’s guess, though.

And that will apparently have to tide us over until the 2027 Vision Pro.
