Those looking for loads of screen space can connect a pair of HDMI monitors to their MacBook with the newly released Plugable USBC-6950M adapter.

And it can do this with Macs that ordinarily support only one external display.

Plugable USBC-6950M makes business travelers more productive

MacBooks are designed to be slim and lightweight, but they accomplished this by skimping on ports. Some models have a single HDMI port, but none have more than that.

Plugable’s new adapter can step in to allow the use of two HDMI displays — both with 4K resolution at 60Hz.

“The USBC-6950M is designed for business travelers, hybrid office users, and anyone looking to enhance the productivity of their Apple products,” said Plugable. “It delivers a smooth dual-display experience without the need for a full docking station.”

The accessory has a small footprint with a 7.9-inch (20cm) integrated cable. It plugs into a single USB-C/Thunderbolt port on the Mac.

Two HDMI monitors with your M1, M2 or M3 MacBook

The base model Apple M1, M2 and M3 processors are easily powerful enough for average users but can only handle two displays. For MacBooks built around this chip, that’s the screen built into the notebook plus a single external monitor.

The USBC-6950M is a workaround. Install a DisplayLink driver on the Mac then plug in the accessory to add support for two external screens.

It’s compatible with macOS 11+, Windows 10 and newer and ChromeOS.

Just launched Tuesday

The Plugable USBC-6950M hit store shelves February 20. The regular cost is $89.95, but Amazon is offering a 5% coupon (don’t forget to check the box.)

Professionals who need dual HDMI displays plus plenty more ports should consider the Plugable Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 Docking Station, which launched in fall 2023. Just be aware, it’s less portable and considerably more expensive.
