Shazam, Apple’s popular app that can name any song in seconds, added a cool new feature Thursday in version 17.3 — it now works even when you wear headphones.

And that’s true for music playing around you or within apps like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, Apple said.

Shazam version 17.3 works with headphone use

Shazam became a hit as an app before Apple bought it in December 2017. Since then, the iPhone giant has integrated the functionality across its platforms, like a Control Center Music Recognition widget added in iOS 14.2 in 2020 and similar functionality in macOS 14.2.

And now, with Shazam version 17.3, a user can identify music while wearing headphones. Here’s how Apple’s release notes describe it:

You can now identify music while wearing headphones (wired or Bluetooth). Simply open the app, check for the headphone icon to confirm your headphones are connected, and then start recognizing music around you or within apps like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Use app or Music Recognition button in iPhone/iPad Control Center

The new functionality works if you download Shazam and launch it on any of your devices.

Or, if you simply want to use the existing Shazam button labeled Music Recognition (with Shazam ‘S’ logo) in Control Center, that will work with headphones on iPhone and iPad. I wore over-ear headphones — and they were Soundcore, not Apple — and Shazam recognized tunes playing on YouTube and Instagram.

Shazam download requires iOS 15.0 or later for iPhone and iPod touch, and iPadOS 15.0 or later for iPad.
