We now know the last possible day Apple will release iOS 17.1: Wednesday, October 24.

That is the date by which the iPhone-maker committed to introducing an update that reduces the amount of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the iPhone 12, as required by a French regulatory agency. And that update is part of iOS 17.1.

iOS 17.1: The French Connection

The French Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) retested the iPhone 12 and found that the phone exceeds the allowable amount of electromagnetic radiation. In September, France ordered the handset pulled from store shelves in the country. Fortunately, the fix is a simple software update. This was quickly developed and approved.

The change is integrated into iOS 17.1, which is currently in beta testing. And we won’t be waiting much longer for the release.

ANFR said Friday that, “The company [Apple] has committed to extending this software update to all French iPhone 12 users by October 24 at the latest.” (Machine translated from French.)

What else is in the next iPhone update

iOS 17.1 is about much more than bringing an older Apple handset into compliance with French regulations. Perhaps the most significant change is support for AirDrop file transfers over the internet. And the upcoming version tweaks the iPhone 15 Pro Action button’s behavior to prevent accidental keypresses.

A number of other, smaller changes are also included.
