Apple will return to its habit of introducing new MacBook Pro models in Q4, according to an unconfirmed report. Supposedly, 14-inch and 16-inch models will hit the market before the end of 2023, both with mini-LED screens.

If true, these will be the second round of new MacBook Pros this year.

Late-2023 MacBook Pro models?

Apple traditionally launched new MacBook Pros in the fall of each year. For example, the M1 models hit the market in November 2020, while the next iteration came in October 2021. But the follow up macOS notebooks came in January 2023, not Q4 2022.

We might not be waiting until 2024 for the next upgrade, though. “Apple is expected to ship new models of 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro devices in the fourth quarter of 2023,” Digitimes reported Thursday.

The report didn’t get more specific about timing, but considering it’s already Q4 2023, the launch needs to be soon.

mini-LED could come to MacBooks

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses a mini-LED screen, and Digitimes claims the next generation of MacBook Pro Models will too.

The notebooks will include “miniLED backlighting that can increase the display brightness by 10% compared to the first-generation specifications,” according to Thursday’s report.

mini-LED screens have thousands of small LEDs providing the backlight, far more than with a standard LCD. That gives the display much greater control over lighting, so some on-screen objects can be bright while others dim.

And the MacBook Pro line will continue to include miniLED backlighting until 2026, according to Digitimes. At that point, it will switch to OLED.

But wait, there’s more

A separate report says Apple has three other models on its agenda for the fourth quarter. If they are both true, the company has some busy months coming up.

Cupertino supposedly plans to introduce an updated version of the 24-inch iMac, a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Air, and an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro — all with a new Apple M3 processor.
