The revamped Sonos Move 2 portable speaker sports stereo sound, up to 24 hours of battery life — twice that of its predecessor — and a slew of design changes since the water-resistant speaker’s initial release four years ago, the company said Wednesday.

Sonos Move 2 becomes available September 20 for $449.

Sonos Move 2 portable speaker

Sonos called the new Move 2 speaker its “most sustainable portable product to date and the first to bring stereo sound outdoors — from al fresco dinners and campfires under the stars to stadium tailgates and poolside parties.”

“Since its 2019 launch, Move continues to be the best-selling speaker in its category thanks to its design, versatility and powerful sound,” said Sonos CEO Patrick Spence.

“We strive to create sound experiences that inspire deeper connections no matter who we’re with or where we are,” he added. “Move 2 advances our commitment to immersive listening by bringing stereo sound to our most popular portable, featuring the same next-gen acoustics and design we debuted with the Era family.”

Sonos said Move 2 includes all-new hardware and software with next-gen acoustics for wide stereo sound and deep bass:

Move 2 comes with a completely overhauled acoustic architecture including dual-tweeters that deliver spacious stereo sound and crisp vocals allowing you to feel the emotional charge of a live performance. Feel the beat from its precision-tuned woofer that produces deep, dynamic bass — even when listening outdoors.

The speaker features concurrent Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. That way, you can “stream via Bluetooth to a stereo pair of Move 2 speakers when connected to WiFi or group Move 2 with the rest of your Sonos system via Wi-Fi to crank your party up a notch,” the company noted.

The speaker’s Trueplay tuning optimizes sound for the unit’s surroundings. And you can also connect a turntable, computer or other audio source using the Sonos Line-In Adapter.

Move 2 offers double the playback time of the original Move speaker, up to 24 hours of battery life. An included USB-C port charges your phone or other electronics on the go, too.

This version of the speaker comes with a detachable charging base and a more-compact adapter to make it easier to place anywhere you want, Sonos said. When the speaker needs a charge, just stick it on the base. And when you bring it somewhere else, like outside, the speaker stands on its own, of course.

Sonos said the speaker carries an IP56 water- and dust-resistance rating, and it can survive accidental drops, splashes, rain, dirt and sun exposure.

The new speaker comes in black and white, like the original, but also a new olive color. The company pointed out Move 2 features the same intuitive user interface as recently launched, HomePod-challenging Era products, “including a capacitive volume slider for simple control, or use Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay2 and Bluetooth to play, pause, check your battery, and more.”

And Move 2 gets points for sustainability. It reduces idle energy use by more than 40%, includes recycled plastics in its build and features a removable and replaceable battery to extend its life cycle before it’s recycled.
