Now that Hijack has finished its run on Apple TV+, fans of the immensely popular limited series want to know if there’ll be a season two. One of the executive producers says, “I hope so.”

Star Idris Elba already said he’s open to the idea.

A huge hit for Apple TV+

When Hijack hit Apple TV+ in June, the thriller immediately shot to the top of the charts. And it stayed there the entire run, ending as one of the most popular shows on streaming.

Idris Elba’s series ranked No. 2 on ReelGood’s list of Top 10 Movies & TV during the week ending August 2. And the thriller came in at No. 6 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming offerings for the week ending July 30. The two services base popularity rankings on streams and engagement on their platforms among millions of users in the United States across all streaming video services.

And now, all the people who enjoyed Hijack want to know if there’ll be more adventures of Sam Nelson.

Will there be a Hijack season 2?

Apple TV+ has not announced a second season for Hijack. And even the enormous popularity of the series doesn’t guarantee one.

The problem is the entire premise of the show: Elba plays a bystander caught in an airline hijacking. Can the producers come up with a non-ridiculous way to put him in the middle of another hijacking?

Variety asked Hakan Kousetta, one of the executive producers for the show, about the possibility of more episodes.

“Oh, gosh, I wish I could tell you that. I hope so but we’ll have to see,” said Kousetta. “I mean, we’ve thought about it, obviously. And that is really challenging. It is something that you’re like, ‘Wow, how would you do that and it not be completely ridiculous?’ We talk about it — but yeah, we’ll have to wait and see. I’m never gonna say no.”

Elba himself was asked the same question last week by Variety. The star said:

“Well, I’m gonna ask you the question. What would be the acceptable scenario that he comes back? Because we’ve thought about this and obviously Apple have gone, “Well, we really love the show.” And I think, you know, Rotten Tomatoes is at 92% at the moment, which is a good sign, but it’s kind of like — he’s not a cop — what would be the acceptable Sam Nelson return? And if I’m honest, I’m not sure. I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack. I’m open to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the character, then I’m in.”

In case you missed Hijack

The series consists of a seven-episode story arc. The season finale streamed August 2.

The official Apple TV+ description says:

“Told in real time, Hijack is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. Elba will star as Sam Nelson, an accomplished negotiator in the business world who needs to step up and use all his guile to try and save the lives of the passengers — but, his high-risk strategy could be his undoing.”

The entire series (or possibly the first season?) is available now on Apple’s streaming service. Access comes with a $6.99-per-month subscription.
