Nathan Pyle’s humorous Strange Planet graphic novels are being made into an Apple TV+ animated series that’s now set to launch in late summer.

The show uses brightly colored aliens to poke fun at all of us.

Strange Planet: ‘Existence is absurd’

Anyone who still thinks cartoons are only for kids needs to wake up and smell the 21st century. Series like Bojack Horseman and Archer are made strictly for adults.

These series are often biting social commentary. Strange Planet on Apple TV+ will be more gentle. “Set in a whimsical world of cotton candy pinks and purples, relatable blue beings explore the absurdity of everyday human traditions,” says Apple about the upcoming show.

Nathan Pyle launched Strange Planet on Instagram then pivoted to a graphic novel. This became a New York Times No. 1 bestseller. There are two follow-up books.

The novel was adapted for Apple TV+ with Dan Harmon, one of the co-creators of Rick and Morty, another adult animated series.

Voice actors include Gotham Award nominee Tunde Adebimpe (Rachel Getting Married), Emmy nominee Demi Adejuyigbe (The Amber Ruffin Show), Lori Tan Chinn (Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens), Critics Choice nominee Danny Pudi (Community) and Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder (Hacks).

Coming this summer

Strange Planet will premiere on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. New episodes in the 10-episode season will appear weekly.

Watch on Apple TV

Watching will come with a $6.99-per-month subscription to Apple TV+. That’s a lower price than all of its larger rivals. And there are no commercial interruptions.

The streaming service offers plenty more hilarious comedies. Beyond the manga-hit Ted Lasso, there’s Shrinking, Bad SistersPlatonic, Schmigadoon! and more.
