With Generative Fill in Photoshop, users can select an area in their image then tell the app what they want added and the application will generate the addition through the power of artificial intelligence.
It’s the latest addition to Adobe Firefly, a collection of tools for generative AI.
New Photoshop tool uses generative AI to easily create new image elements
Photoshop and other high-quality image-editing applications all have tools that can automatically fill a specified area in a picture with a texture or pattern similar to what’s around it. Generative Fill takes that to the next level.
A user can select an area of an image, then open a text prompt and type in something to add in that area. For example, take a picture of a road, select an area next to it, then type in “Add a stop sign,” and Photoshop will add a stop sign that matches the rest of the image’s perspective, lighting and style.
The AI generated pictures are pulled from Adobe’s extensive collection of stock images so they don’t violate anyone’s copyright.
“Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations,”said Ashley Still, SVP, Digital Media at Adobe, in a statement.
Start testing
Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature is now available in the desktop beta application. Adobe promises it will leave testing and be generally available in the second half of 2023.
The feature is also available today as a module within the Firefly beta app.
Adobe started rolling out the Firefly toolset in March, with an initial focus on the generation of images and text effects.
