Apple TV+ revealed the launch date for Hijack, a seven-part thriller starring Idris Elba. When it debuts June 28, the series will follow a hijacked plane in “real time,” with Elba playing a passenger trying to negotiate with terrorists.

The first images from the show were also released on Friday.

Idris Elba will Hijack our attention with new Apple TV+ series

The word “thriller” appears in the descriptions of many Apple TV+ series, including the mega-hit Severance. It’s a popular genre that pulls in plenty of viewers.

Clearly, the streaming service hopes that will happen with Hijack. But making Idris Elba the star nearly guarantees the show will draw plenty of attention.

The teaser for the series from Apple TV+ says:

“Told in real time, Hijack is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven-hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. Elba will star as Sam Nelson, an accomplished negotiator in the business world who needs to step up and use all his guile to try and save the lives of the passengers — but, his high-risk strategy could be his undoing.”

Average viewers might know Idris Elba best for his role in the Thor movies, or for starring in Luther. But those are just highlights of a long, distinguished career that includes five Emmy nominations.

It was created by George Kay (Lupin, Criminal) and Jim Field Smith (Criminal, Truth Seekers) who also wrote and lead directed the series respectively.

Coming this summer to Apple TV+

Hijack will make its global premiere on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, June 28. The first two episodes will debut that night, followed by weekly successive episodes.

Watching comes with a $6.99-per-month subscription to Apple’s streaming video service. This also brings access to other thrillers, including The Last Thing He Told Me, Black Bird, Slow Horses and many more.
