AirPods charging cases with a USB-C port in place of the Lightning one are already being produced, according to a tipster.
These will be ready when, or possibly even before, the introduction on an iPhone that uses USB-C for data/charging.
USB-C is coming to iPhone, AirPods and other accessories
Apple is undoubtedly dumping Lightning in favor of USB-C. The transition is being forced by the EU, and this fall’s iPhone 15 could be the first with USB-C — The pro version might even have Thunderbolt. And the handset’s accessories are making the switch, too.
That includes the AirPods charging case, which is well on its way to release, according to a post from an Apple tipster. “USB-C MFI cables and Earpods are in mass production,” claims ShrimpApplePro on Twitter.
An earlier report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said a case for AirPods Pro 2 with the industry standard charging port is in the offing. It could be out at any time between now and the end of September.
But this may be the only version of Apple’s wireless earbuds to make the transition. The non-Pro models supposedly will stick with Lightning.
