Belkin is switching to make its top-selling mobile power products out of 73% to 75% post-consumer recycled plastics. The change will make no difference to the appearance or price of the accessories, but will significantly reduce the company’s carbon emissions.

PCR versions of the poplar chargers will launch throughout 2023.

PCR plastics are ones that have been used and are otherwise headed for a landfill. It’s different — and much more difficult to use in manufacturing — than standard post-industrial recycled plastic, aka PIR, which reuses materials collected at a factory during mass production.

Belkin says the switch will save an estimated 7,000 metric tons of carbon emissions and reduce CO2-eq emissions for its PCR products by up to 67%.

“When we think about the difference a company of our size and influence can make on the planet, moving away from using virgin plastics in our products is an obvious decision,” said Steve Malony, Belkin’s CEO, in a statement Wednesday.

The products that will be first to ship with post-consumer recycled plastics are:

  • BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Car Charger 10W
  • BoostCharge USB-C PD 3.0 PPS Wall Charger 25W
  • BoostCharge Dual USB-C PD Wall Charger 40W
  • BoostCharge Pro 4-Port GaN Charger 108W
  • BoostCharge Pro Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger with PPS 45W
  • BoostCharge Pro Dual USB-C GaN Wall Charger with PPS 65W

As noted, these will launch throughout 2023. Look for packaging that says, “Made with Recycled Plastic Products.”

More information is available on Belkin’s website.
