You may not consider the humble desk mat a necessity in your computer setup. But what if you could charge your smartphone and earbuds charging case just by placing them on your desk? You can with the new Alti Wireless Charging Desk Mat. Accessories maker Journey unveiled it Thursday.

“This charging mat is our all-in-one solution to keeping your desk clutter-free while simultaneously charging your devices. We promise that it will soon become your favorite desk companion,” the company said.

Journey Alti Wireless Charging Desk Mat

The new Alti Wireless Charging Desk Mat uses a charging panel to power up your iPhone and AirPods charging case. It attaches magnetically to either end of the reversible desk mat, which has vegan leather on one side and soft felt on the other.

The mat also offers a bit of storage space, in that you can peel open the mat and place papers in it.

“The reversible ALTI features a modular wireless charging panel that fast charges your smartphone and earbuds simultaneously,” Journey said. “It can be attached on either left or right side to suit the user. You can also pull open the Alti to stow paper and notes to create a tidy workspace.”

MagSafe compatible

While it’s great that you can simply lay down your devices to charge on the Alti mat, note that it’s MagSafe-compatible, not made with official MagSafe technology.

The distinction there is that an iPhone will take 7.5W of charging power from the panel even though it puts out up to 15W for smartphones, according to Journey. With an official MagSafe charger an iPhone would take the full 15W. An AirPods or other earbuds wireless charging case gets 5W from the panel.

The size of the mat is 30.7 inches by 14.5 inches. It’s 4mm thick. It comes in black and light gray colors. Journey said it ethically sources the leather it uses in the mat and the packaging can be recycled.
