The SanDisk PRO-G40 SSD checks all the boxes professionals are looking for in an on-the-go external drive. It offers up to 2 terabytes of capacity, it’s extremely rugged and supports Thunderbolt 3.

The drive also supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 for wider compatibility.

SanDisk PRO-G40 SSD has what pros need in an SSD

MacBooks come at premium prices, and additional built-in storage can significantly increase the cost. External drives are a way around this. But ones designed for light duty often aren’t right for professionals.

“I need storage solutions that are lightweight, compact, rugged, and insanely fast. This checks all the boxes for me,” said Andy Handcock, action, portrait and reportage photographer. “The PRO-G40 SSD can easily withstand the rigors of travel and location work while doing so with a minimal footprint.”

SanDisk’s drive meets the definition of “ultra rugged.” It features high-level IP68 dust/water resistance, 4000 pound crush resistance and up to 3 meters drop resistance.

And it’s fast. All recent Macs offer Thunderbolt 3 for 40 Gbps data transfers and so does the PRO-G40. That’s up to 2700 MBps read and 1900 MBps write. But not every cable can handle Thunderbolt. That’s why SanDisk also built in support for USB 3.2 Gen 2. It tops out at 10 Gbps but is a better option than not being able to access the drive without the right cable.

The SanDisk PRO-G40 SSD is available now at $299.99 for 1 TB or $449.99 for 2 TB in the United States.

A rival alternative is the OWC Envoy Pro FX. It’s also rugged and supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2. The external drive is available in capacities up to 8 TB.
