Several older iPhones and iPads reportedly won‘t be able to upgrade to iOS 16 when it debuts in 2022. While that’s sure to disappoint anyone still using these devices, the newest one will be 5 years old at that point. And one of them will be 8 years old.
Apple continues to offer operating system upgrades for its computers for many years, but iOS 16 will supposedly mark the end up of updates for the A8 and A9/A9X processor.
3 iPhone models won’t get upgrades
The French-language site iPhoneSoft reports being told by “our developer friend at Apple” that the iPhone 6s (2015), iPhone 6s Plus (2015) and iPhone SE (2016) will be unable to upgrade to iOS 16 when it’s released next autumn.
It’s been a while since people got this sort of news. Both iOS 15 and iOS 14 are able to run on the same handsets as iOS 13 could.
The iPod touch 7 (2019), Apple’s last PDA, will get iOS 16.
4 iPad models won’t move up iOS 16
Several older tablets will also top out at iOS 15, according to the same report from iPhoneSoft. That includes the iPad Air 2 (2014), iPad mini 4 (2015), iPad Pro 9.7 (2015), 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2015) and the iPad 5 (2017)
Apple will almost certainly unveil iOS 16 in June 2022 and then launch it a few months later. At this point, what will be in it is anyone’s guess. That hasn’t stopped people from speculating about the feature set, of course.
