Those hoping for a major Apple Watch overhaul could again be disappointed next year, with a new report claiming only minor design changes are planned for Apple Watch Series 8 — which could be almost identical to Series 7.

Many fans had expected an Apple Watch revamp this year after months and months of speculation and leaks. But it’s beginning to look like those weren’t just badly timed, but perhaps entirely inaccurate.

Series 8 could see minimal design tweaks

Claims made by a number of typically reliable sources suggest Apple has been planning a new Apple Watch form factor with straight edges and flat cover glass — much like those on the latest iPhone and iPad models.

When that design didn’t appear this year — with Apple Watch Series 7 looking at lot like its predecessors, but with a larger display — it was assumed that the leaks were based on a future Apple Watch model that may come in 2022.

But according to @LeaksApplePro and iDropNews, Apple’s smartwatch won’t see big design changes next year, either. In fact, they believe Apple Watch Series 8 will be identical to Series 7, but with a second speaker cutout.

“I really hope it’s just some sort of early prototype, but based on the CADs I have seen and the images sent to me, I really doubt it’s just a prototype,” the report reads.

Apple Watch probably won’t change much

It should be noted that iDropNews doesn’t have a particularly excellent track record with Apple rumors, so it would be a good idea to take these claims with a pinch of salt for now. Having said that, they’re not exactly farfetched.

We certainly wouldn’t be surprised if Apple Watch Series 8 looks just like its predecessors — or if the many rumors and renders surrounding its rumored redesign never come to fruition. They could be based on early prototypes or design possibilities that have since been scrapped.
