Build your Apple Watch charging dock out of Lego bricks

Once you get an Apple Watch, you may be tempted to buy a charging dock for it. But folks on Reddit.com are happy to show off how they saved some money by constructing charging docks out of their beloved Lego building bricks.

All you need is the USB charging cable and puck that came with your Apple Watch and the imagination to make something that hides it while charging the wearable.

If you’re ready to save a few bucks — or, in some cases, quite a few bucks — on a charging dock for your Apple Watch, take some inspiration from Redditors’ creations, pictured below.  In some cases, they offer several photos to give you an idea of how they did it, so you can do it, too. Or something like it.

Here’s one that Redditor Tualski said they made from extra Lego pieces laying around the house. For a little Frankenstein Lego Apple Watch stand, it’s interesting — and it comes complete with a handful of characters (Star Wars? We’re not sure). Follow the link above to see a brief video; no photo included.

And then there are others that lack a theme or elaborate construction, but they’re certainly more interesting than the Apple Watch USB charging cable and puck alone.

Automotive-themed dock

The oil indicator brick at the base of Redditor selfhood’s dock adds a nifty automotive touch. The whole thing looks a bit like a lift for a car, but here the car is an Apple Watch. The dock is on the simple side and probably won’t overtax your ingenuity or your Lego supply. You can see the white cable is just loosely wrapped around a centerpiece; other creations take bigger pains to hide it.

SpongeBob SquarePants helps out

The white charging cable is less evident in selfhood’s next effort, a SpongeBob SquarePants-themed Apple Watch dock. In this one, SpongeBob holds the cable as it exits the dock. It’s really just a base for the charging puck to sit on, but it’s full of personality.

Voltron-esque robot dock

Redditor Ingo053’s dock carries a Voltron robot vibe, one commenter pointed out. We’re not sure what it’s meant to resemble, although “robot” would be among our guesses. Whatever it is, it holds up the Apple Watch nicely while it conceals the charging cable. Not bad.

Radical vehicle

This Lego dock, created by Redditor johnny-generalissimo, looks more elaborate than the others we’ve seen. The vehicle forming the base for the charger looks like something from Lego’s Mindstorms set. In the photo, the perforated silicone Apple Watch strap looks a bit like it’s part of the apparatus. Very cool.

Redditor Air020’s Apple Watch dock is sort of a raised platform that hides the charger under the watch. And it also covers up the cable, giving it a channel underneath so it can trail off to the side.
