iCloud Private Relay, a privacy feature that recently debuted, is temporarily offline. The service for iPhone, Mac and iPad is a public beta so a few hiccups are to be expected.

Apple promises the optional, for-pay add-on feature will be back online soon.

Update: Private Relay is back after being offline for 7.5 hours on Wednesday.

It’s really down this time

Users of iCloud Private Relay might be accustomed to getting notifications that the service not working. These come whenever a subscriber’s device unexpectedly loses internet access.

But that’s not what happened this time. A check of Apple’s official System Status page shows the service is offline globally. And the iPadOS Settings application says, “Private Relay is temporarily unavailable due to a technical problem. It will resume working automatically when the problem is resolved.”

iCloud Private Relay 101

Private Relay makes it much harder for the websites you visit to track you. It’s not a VPN, but does have some similarities. The feature masks your real IP address so that no one can see your exact location or browsing activity.

Although it is part of iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey, it is a beta. It’s rare for Apple to built a beta into shipping software, but that’s what happened.

Private Relay is a part of iCloud+ which means it’s not free. But it costs very little and comes bundled with additional iCloud storage at no extra cost.
