An Apple job listing has people scratching their heads because it mentions an operating system that doesn’t exist. It references “homeOS” alongside iOS, watchOS and other known operating systems.

It’s possible this is something Apple is working on. But there’s a less exciting possibility: if could be another name for something millions of people use every day.

Come to Apple and learn about homeOS

The job opening is for a “Sr. iOS UI Engineer-Apple Music.” It says “You’ll get to work with system engineers across Apple, learning the inner-workings of iOS, watchOS, tvOS and homeOS.” All those other operating systems are well known, but not homeOS.

Update: Apple has removed the job opening.

This isn’t the first time this mystery OS has shown up in an Apple music-related job listing. It was in one back in June as well. And the homeOS references were later changed to “HomePod.”

Exciting or boring possibilities

There are rumors that Apple is making an Apple TV that’s also a HomePod. Maybe this combo device will launch running homeOS. If so, the OS might be tvOS with extra smart speaker functions.

But a less exciting possibility is that this is simply another name for the software that controls HomePod smart speakers. Currently, this is called simply “HomePod software” and updates come though the user’s iPhone. Perhaps this gets called “homeOS” inside Apple.
