Instagram is rolling out the ability to upload photos and videos from your desktop through a web browser. You can already access the platform on your Mac or PC, but the experience has always been extremely limited.

Instagram admits that uploading through a web browser is one of its most requested features, and it began testing the upgrade over the summer. The Facebook-owned company has now confirmed it will soon be available to all.

Upload to Instagram through your desktop browser

If you log in to Instagram on your desktop today, it’s possible to see your feed, like photos and videos, access your direct messages, and search. Instagram has even added the ability to view Stories on the web.

But the platform’s biggest and most important feature — uploading content — is missing when you use Instagram on your Mac or PC (and Safari on iPad). Instagram has finally confirmed that will change later this month.

After months of testing, the ability to upload photos and videos up to one minute in length will roll out to all Instagram users on the web on October 21. It’s not yet clear exactly how feature-rich the experience will be.

Instagram hasn’t told us whether users can expect all the same editing tools and filters they’re used to seeing on their mobile devices. So, we’ll have to wait to find out whether the web-based interface will be as good.

Other features also on the way

Other new features are also hitting Instagram this month, including Reels, the company’s TikTok competitor, and a feature called Collabs. The latter, as its name suggests, will allow users to team up on feed posts and Reels.

Users can invite someone else to collaborate with them using the tagging screen on Instagram. If the other person accepts, the upload appears on both accounts, and will have a shared view count, like count, and comment thread.
