Apple TV+ released the first trailer for its adaptation of the children’s classic Harriet the Spy. The animated series about the irrepressible Harriet M. Welsch is set to debut on the streaming service on November 19.

Plenty of talent is involved. It’ll star Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Beanie Feldstein, and include Emmy winner Jane Lynch. The series will be produced by The Jim Henson Company.

Harriet the Spy trailer reveals first glimpse of animated series

Harriet (Feldstein), an outspoken and perpetually curious 11-year-old girl, wants to be a writer. She believes that in order to be a good writer, she’ll need to know everything. And to know everything means she’ll need to spy … on everyone.

The series is, of course, based on Harriet the Spy, a book by Louise Fitzhugh published in 1964. Not at all a children’s fantasy, it deals with realistic characters in New York City.

The novel version of Harriet has been called “the most unlikable hero in children’s lit.” The trailer for the Apple TV+ version presents her as fiercely independent and adventurous, but doesn’t seem the stories will be as dark as the book. The series adaptation is being written by Will McRobb (co-creator of The Adventures of Pete & Pete).

Beanie Feldstein was nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy for Booksmart. Famed comedian Jane Lynch (Glee, Wreck it Ralph) will provide the voice of Ole Golly, Harriet’s larger-than-life, no-nonsense nanny.

The first half of the series (five episodes) debuts on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 19, 2021, and the second half premier in spring 2022.
