TV industry virtuosos Phil Lord and Chris Miller created a very unusual comedy series for Apple TV+. The Afterparty is about a murder but each episode is seen through a different suspect’s perspective and shot in a different film genre.

The laughs start in the first trailer for the show, which debuted Thursday. Watch it now

The Afterparty isn’t the usual murder mystery

The eight-episode series is set at a high school reunion afterparty with old friends gathering to drink, laugh and kill someone.

“By giving each episode its own unique style of storytelling, we were able to make what feels like eight distinctly different but interconnected films that highlight how everyone’s personal perspective and biases shape how they see the world,” said Lord and Miller.

The Afterparty will premiere globally in January 2022 on Apple TV+.

An impressive collection of talent

You might recognize some of the faces in the new trailer, as the comedy series will star Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoë Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou and Dave Franco.

The Afterparty was created and directed by Chris Miller, who is also showrunner. The list of credits for him and collaborator Phil Lord is lengthy, not surprising considering they’ve won Oscars and Golden Globes while working together. They directed and wrote The Lego Movie and directed multiple episodes of How I Met Your Mother. Plus, they are no strangers a mixing film genres, as the pair produced of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which Lord also co-wrote.
