It seems “jelly scrolling” isn’t the only thing plaguing some 2021 iPad mini displays. A growing number of users are taking to online platforms to report strange screen defects that include discoloration and distortion.

“Push very lightly on the screen and you will see distortion and discoloration,” one user wrote on Reddit, who had their original 2021 iPad mini replaced because of this issue, then discovered the same problem on the second unit.

iPad mini’s Liquid Retina display not so perfect?

“On most models this will happen in three spots along the top of the display,” the same user said. They claim to have taken their device to an Apple Store where a Genius discovered the same issue on the demo units on display.

“He was very surprised and mentioned that I should keep my eye out for a recall — he said he wouldn’t be surprised if there is one.”

The issue may have something to do with the iPad mini’s display pushing up against the components that sit beneath it. “You can clearly see the speaker indent the LCD when pushing on either side,” another user wrote.

“I’m experiencing this on my unit as well,” added another. “You may be interested to know though that I’m also experiencing a much more severe, quite bright, cross-shaped similar discoloration.”

Not a widespread issue … yet

This doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem among 2021 iPad mini owners. Other have tried replicating the issue on their units and report that their displays seem absolutely fine. But the list of complaints is growing.

It’s not clear what exactly is causing the discoloration and distortion, or why it only appears to be affecting certain iPad mini units. It’s unlikely Apple will comment on this publicly, but we have asked the question.

This is the kind of issue Apple is typically keen to fix right away with a replacement device. So, if you are experiencing it on your iPad mini, we recommend visiting your local Apple Store to get your device swapped.
