Apple Studios has debuted the trailer for CODA, a movie which swept the 2021 Sundance Film Festival — capturing its Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast, Directing Award, Audience Award, and Grand Jury Prize.

A coming-of-age drama starring Emilia Jones and previous Oscar winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God), the movie is about a teenaged girl torn between following her musical dreams and staying with deaf family who rely on her. The title is an acronym standing for “Child of Deaf Adults.”

What you need to know about CODA

CODA was both written and directed by Siân Heder, who previously worked as a writer on Orange Is the New Black and an episode of Apple TV+’s Little America. Speaking about CODA, Heder previously said that:

“I have been so moved by the outpouring of response to the film and am so excited to have found a partner in Apple that loves and deeply gets this movie, the spirit in which it was created and is committed to having this film reach the widest audience possible in a thoughtful and meaningful way.”

Apple paid $25 million for the rights to the movie after Sundance. This wasn’t the only big movie Apple snapped up at the festival: It also bought the rights to the Will Smith and Antoine Fuqua runaway slave drama Emancipation.

CODA debuts on Apple TV+ on August 13. It will also get a limited theatrical run to make it eligible for awards like the Oscars. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a critical score of 95% based on 100 reviews. The critical consensus reads: “CODA‘s story offers few surprises, but Emilia Jones’ brilliant lead performance brings this coming-of-age story vividly to life.”

This is just the latest in a string of movies Apple has debuted on its streaming service. Apple’s goal is reportedly to have 10-12 movies debut on Apple TV+ each year.
