Not everyone has the nerve to crack open their 2021 iPad Pro, but an iFixit teardown reveals the interesting bits inside.

It’s not just for fun — taking the tablet apart is necessary to find out the exact battery capacity because Apple doesn’t share that detail.

Plus, iFixit took a magnifying glass to the mini-LED display in the 12.9-inch version.

2021 iPad Pro teardown: bigger battery

After disassembling the tablet, iFixit found a 40.33 Wh battery. That’s a 10% increase from the 36.71 Wh battery in the 2020 model. That said, users aren’t reporting significantly longer battery lives with the 2021 iPad Pro in real-world use.

The teardown was of the 12.9-inch version, not the 11-inch one. However, earlier reports indicate the battery in this version hasn’t changed from the 2020 model.

mini-LED to the max

A highlight of the larger 2021 iPad Pro model is the mini-LED display. This employs over 10,000 tiny LEDs in the backlight, far more than with a standard LCD, providing greater contrast.

The iFixit teardown puts the miniature LEDs under a microscope for people who like to see how the sausage gets made. And it also compares the 2,596 dimming zones offered by the latest iPadOS device with the simple row of backlight LEDs in previous iPads.

And the company says it plans more videos on the latest Apple tablet.
