An Apple tipster may have leaked an image of a new version of the Apple Pencil. The picture comes with no description, but the stylus shown appears to be either shorter or thicker than the current one.

The supposed leak comes from Mr-White on Twitter, who has a mixed history of predicting future Apple products. The caption for the single image says only, “New Apple Pencil.”

Perhaps the Apple Pencil 3

The original Apple stylus from 2015 charges with a Lightning connector under an end cap. A newer version for the iPad Pro series debuted in 2018. This gets power via inductive charging from certain Apple tablets.

The model shown by Mr-White appears to quite similar to the second-generation one, though a side-by-side comparison seems to show that the version in Wednesday’s leaked image is slightly shorter.

The Apple Pencil 2 seems longer than one in a new leaked image.

The current version also has a matte finish, but the one in Mr-White’s picture seems to be shinier.  The removable writing tip has also supposedly been redesigned.

Previous leaks indicate that Apple will launch a moderately updated version of the iPad Pro later in March, along with a significantly redesigned iPad mini. Perhaps the new stylus is intended for one or both of these.

Or it might not be real. There are plenty of third-party styli that mimic the look of the Apple Pencil.
