Anker took the wraps off an wireless charging stand that can power up an iPhone 12 and a pair of AirPods. It also began offering a small charging pad.

Both cling to the handset with magnets built into Apple’s latest iOS device. But they don’t fully support MagSafe.

Stand and charger in one

Anker PowerWave Magnetic 2-in-1 Stand connects to magnets built into the iPhone 12 to hold the device up, in either portrait or landscape mode. It provides 7.5watts of charging.

An AirPods charger is built into the base. This sends up to 5W of power to cases that support wireless charging, like the one that comes with AirPods Pro.

Anker’s iPhone 12 stand is available now on Amazon for $35.99.

Anker charging pad

The accessory maker also began offering the PowerWave Magnetic Pad. This small charger clings to the iPhone 12 to provide 7.5W of power.

It’s clearly intended to compete with the Apple MagSafe Charger ($39), which can offer up to 15W. But Anker’s version is available on Amazon for $21.99.

Anker chargers don’t support MagSafe

MagSafe puts magnets around the wireless charging coil of the iPhone 12. These automatically align the iPhone to the charger. Anker’s new products use these.

But Apple sprang the MagSafe on the world last October. And it appears many companies are still struggling to catch up. Anker’s new chargers would have benefitted from full support, but there apparently hasn’t been time. They have the magnets, but that’s all. Which is why Anker doesn’t use the term “MagSafe.”

Devices that do support Apple’s new system offer 15W of power. Neither of these PowerWave charger can.

But because they depend on magnets built into the handset, neither charger is intended for handsets earlier than the iPhone 12.
