Apple Music subscribers can now use Apple’s streaming music service on Google Nest smart speakers, thanks to an update. It means that users can access the Apple Music catalog with voice commands on their Nest Audio, Nest Hub Max and Nest Mini.

Google’s smart speakers supports various streaming audio services, such as Spotify. However, Apple Music was not among them. In order to listen to Apple Music, users previously needed to use an Amazon Echo device or Apple’s own HomePod.

TechCrunch notes that:

“To set this up, Google device owners will need to link their Apple Music accounts in their Google Home app and set it as their default music service. Then they can start using commands like, ‘Hey Google, play New Music Daily playlist’ or ‘Hey Google, play Rap Life playlist.'”

Apple Music debuted in June 2015, more than five years ago. Its first Android app arrived in November that year. Since then, Apple Music has risen to become one of the most popular streaming music services, second only to Google. However, Apple’s HomePod market share has lagged significantly behind Amazon and Google’s offerings. Whether that changes with the advent of the HomePod mini remains to be seen. For now, though, this should open up the number of smart speakers able to play Apple Music.

Apple and Google, despite past animosities (remember the whole “thermonuclear war” thing?) have a history of offering their services on one another’s platforms. Google is the number one developer for iOS. It also pays Apple billions of dollars each year to be the search engine that powers the iPhone. The two companies teamed up to launch the contact-tracing COVID-19 framework. And now you can listen to Apple Music on Google’s latest smart speakers. It’s like a touching Christmas tale of friendship.
