The experts at DisplayMate absolutely raved about the quality of the iPhone 12 Pro Max screen. The testing company says Apple’s latest handset set or matched 11 smartphone display performance records.

iPhone 12 Pro Max screen: Color accuracy and brightness

DisplayMate put the OLED screen in the flagship iPhone through a battery of tests, seeking to judge almost every aspect. The device passed with flying colors.

“The Absolute Color Accuracy of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is truly impressive,” said Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, DisplayMate’s president in his analysis. The display is “visually indistinguishable from perfect, and very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have.”

Contrast, reflectance and more

There was some moderate criticism of the iPhone 12 Pro Max display’s contrast. The DisplayMate report says it’s slightly too high, due to a slightly too steep intensity scale. Still, Soneira admitted test photos used to evaluate picture quality looked “absolutely stunning and beautiful, even to my experienced hyper-critical eyes.”

And these tests show that the handset look great whatever the lighting conditions are. “To be usable in high ambient light a display needs a dual combination of high screen brightness and low screen reflectance – the iPhone 12 Pro Max has both,” says Soneira. Reflectance is the tendency of screens to act as a mirror, and DisplayMate measured iPhone 12 Pro Max reflectance at 4.8%, one of the lowest scores it’s ever seen.

All together, Apple’s flagship handset produced stellar results. “Based on our objective Lab Tests and Measurements the iPhone 12 Pro Max receives a DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award earning DisplayMate’s highest ever display performance grade of A+ and setting or matching 11 smartphone display performance records,” noted Soneira.
