Mario Kart Tour recently turned one, marking its first year on iOS following its debut in September 2019. To celebrate, the game is offering a slew of anniversary themed celebrations — including new characters, courses, and an intriguing new Auto mode.

Auto Mode can be selected at the beginning of a race. You can then watch the characters speed round the course a bit like an extended demo mode. If you’re into taking screenshots of the game, it’s a good addition since you don’t have to worry about controlling the character.

There are also new courses that have arrived as part of the birthday bash. Things kick off with a five city themed course, including a new remix of New York Minute, a previous course in which you race around some of the landmarks in the Big Apple.

On top of this, there are some additional characters up for grabs. Mario (Musician), Baby Rosalina (Detective), Shy Guy (Pastry Chef), and Wario (Hiker) are all present and correct as spotlight drivers during the second week of Mario Kart‘s 1st Anniversary Tour event.

Mario Kart Tour keeps you coming back for more

This game is the first time Nintendo’s iconic kart-racing franchise has been available on a non-Nintendo mobile. While it’s not quite the same experience as playing Mario Kart on a console, I’ll give Nintendo plenty of props for doing its best to keep the game fresh.

There are regular updates, including new characters to try out, new modes, and a rolling range of courses to race through. The courses only hang around for a bit, but if you manage to secure any of the characters during their appearance in the game they’re yours to keep. The results are a formula that’s designed to (and succeeds at) keeping you coming back for more.

You can download Mario Kart Tour for free from the App Store. Although the game includes in-app purchases, these aren’t necessary for you to enjoy the zany Nintendo racing action. According to Apple, this was the most downloaded App Store game of 2019.
